K104/WSPK On Reduced Power?
« on: June 09, 2012, 10:06:48 PM »

Just curious as I've not been able to get K104 for about a week now. I think I've picked them up very weakly at times. Usually I'm able to get fairly good reception with a twirl of the antenna on certain radios...as you'd expect, some radios are better than others.

I'm not sure if this is indeed the case as I'm in central Westchester County and there could be some interference coming from a pirate that I've heard very weakly on or near the 104.7 frequency or it could be something else (electrical appliance, etc.).

The online stream is up and running normally.

WSPK sounded loud and strong as usual when I was driving from Albany to Rockland on Thursday evening.

The last week or so has brought some very strong summertime FM propagation to the region - both tropospheric ducting up and down the Atlantic coast and e-skip, which can bring in signals from 1000-1500 miles away. It's entirely possible the noise that's obscuring WSPK for you is a result of some combination of those phenomena.

Thanks Scott. I do recall on early Friday morning getting some of the Long Island east-end stations for a bit - including a faint WELJ-FM-104.7.

7.4kW ERP.
The last time I was in the area, the signal was as good as always. Since WSPK replaced their antenna, the signal is better than ever, it seems.

The big problem in NYC is the massive infiltration of pirates on 104.7 now kill it there.

There is currently a very strong pirate coming from the south killing WSPK's signal as of late in most of Rockland County.....Usually you can pull a listenable signal from WSPK in Rockland and extreme NE Bergen County.

And on the flip side I could just make out WSPK all the way in SEASIDE NJ this weekend too.

Referring to my original post: I was able to get normal reception on K104 on Wed. morning 6/13. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a pirate (as mentioned by GSP163) or some other transmission that was blocking it for a while.
