Going head to head with Matty in the Morning?  Isn't that like starting a land war in Asia or going against a Sicilian when death is on the line?

I mean, seriously.  CBS had easy pickings when they set the SportsHub against WEEI.   Taking on Matty is like bringing a knife to a gun fight.  A plastic knife.  No, a SPORK to a gun fight.   Grin

Also, as a side effect, either "The Cove" or "Mercy Rock" will be gone.

I don't know who is doing the morning show for CBS's top-40 WXRK-92.3 ("Now") in New York, but I wouldn't be completely surprised if 103.3 (whatever call letters it gets) simulcasts it.

That could save a lot of money.

On the other hand, how about a "Maximum Hitz" morning show with reduced commercials and little (if any) talk/news/weather/traffic??

Biggest blunder? In trying to knock down the CHR wall of KISS and Jamn, CBS has left a hole in the market. Now CC can launch Oldies on 101.7. And if CBS drops the WODS call letters, then you can say hello to 101.7 WODS!

This doesn't leave a "hole" that hasn't been there for quite a while already. WODS has not been an "oldies" station for four years, since they dropped the word "oldies" from all usage in 2008, and dropped all '50s/early '60s music over the past decade and became a "classic hits" station.

With very slight tweaking, WROR's format will (and already pretty much does) fill any "hole" left by the departure of the recent WODS classic hits format, and I don't see anyone launching any new "older oldies" stations nowadays in today's demographics.

Assuming they hit the ground running, AMP could well be achieve the same kind of success as AMP in LA. Find the weak spot, and exploit it. While it may not have hurt KIIS totally, the AMP found their spot and are doing alright.

Matty is old.  Kiss 108 largely sounds lazy.  Just because Bostonians don't know better doesn't mean they can't learn, stodgy as they are.

Fact is, one-sixth of documented Boston radio listening is dedicated to Kiss and Jam'n.  Bostonians like the hits.  They're ripe for the picking.  Put on some personalities that don't drone on and complain about things.  Find the hippest 27 year old in Boston and put them on the morning show.  Jenny Johnson?  Kelly Malone?  Ace Gershfeld?  Find somebody who has Matty's magnetic humility without his complaining and dull vocal register, and you have a shot at a four share.

I caught the end of today's show… ironically, Matty was joking about how they talk too much and play too many commercials. I know a number of younger people who just want to hear music in the AM. From my experience, AMP could really clean up in mornings with 18-25 listeners who would otherwise go the iPod/aux jack route. I guess this theory will be put to the test!

speculation on new call letters for the new Amp???

Hopefully something better than WDZH, the AMP in Detroit.

On one hand, the loss of WODS is a blow to Boston radio. Although the music can readily be found elsewhere (WROR in Boston; along with WFNQ, WWFX, WWBB, and WCIB depending on your location in the market), the personality lineup at 103.3 trumped the rest. JJ and Paula easily belong in any Boston radio hall of fame.

But on the other hand, someone is finally taking on the 800 lb. gorilla of the whole market, a move that this board has suggested for years. Although the Z100 vs. NOW 92.3 and KIIS vs. AMP 97.1 battles are well-chronicled, both Z100 and KIIS are Clear Channel's flagship properties, and they are a pair of well-defended fortresses. Check out the damage that Cox's one-year old Hot 101.5 has done to CC's 93-3 FLZ in Tampa - if CBS can come on strong, like others have said, this is going to be great to watch.

Not sure if this was done to stunt a Clear Channel move at 101.7, but I'd say this increases the odds that a classic-leaning "Mike" type station might pop up there - something heavy on the 80's and 90's with a handful of "oldies" and safe newer tracks.  WODS likely had a lot more P1's than Mike-FM did, but there's two classic hits-esque Boston stations gone in the same year.  Would be a much smarter move for 101.7 than a brand of talk that's highly unpopular in 101.7's broadcast area.

"When looking at the habits of BOSTON radio listeners, it is clear the music most favored by the biggest group of people is contemporary hit music," said SVP/Market Mgr. MARK HANNON. "BOSTON's New 103.3 AMP RADIO will serve the audience with all of the hits from artists topping the charts, and create a number of ways for listeners to interact with the station -- from live events to special appearances and contests."

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. CBS didn't learn "Jack" after their dismal failure in New York flipping the format on WCBS-FM. They had to go back to classic hits. Here we go again! This time in Boston.

Let's see if they have some bad books.

Exactly! This seems like another "Joel Hollander" type decision.  We'll see.
