New Triple A in Columbia, SC
« on: June 30, 2012, 07:43:28 PM »

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned here, but Columbia, SC has a new Triple A as WWNU flips from Lite AC to Triple A as "92-1 The Palm" yesterday (6/29/2012). This makes 2 Triple A stations in the same market (a rarity!!!) as 99.3 WXRY-LP has been on the air since 2005. First song played was "Hey, Ho" by the Lumineers.

From listening, WWNU seams to balance themselves between playing currents and older titles and artists, while WXRY leans more toward a more Pop/Alternative sound. As I'm typing this, they've played Paul Simon's "Kodachrome", something that WXRY would never touch.

Here is a sample of listening for 30 minutes to WWNU on 6/30/2012 beginning at 7:30 PM.

Title/Artist

"One Headlight" - The Wallflowers
"Eyes Wide Open" - Gotye
"Wild Night" - Van Morrison
"White Snow" - Red Wanting Blue
"Runaway Train" - Soul Asylum
"Revival" - Allman Brothers Band
"Windows Are Rolled Down" - Amos Lee
"Texas Flood" - Stevie Ray Vaughan
"Queen Of California" - John Mayer
"All I Want" - Toad The Wet Sprocket

And here's WXRY's playlist during the same half hour:

Title/Artist

"Never Go Back" - Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
"Santa Monica" - Everclear
"Simple Song" - The Shins
"It's a Shame About Ray" - The Lemonheads
"Young Blood" - Naked and Famous
"Don't Gotta Work it Out" - Fitz and the Tantrums
"Set Fire to the Rain" - Adele
"Counting Blue Cars" - Dishwalla
"Lonely Boy" - The Black Keys
"Under the Bridge" - Red Hot Chili Peppers

WXRY's stream:

Thoughts?

Good playlist. Standard Triple-A format. Can they both survive in South Carolina though?

Time will tell

Columbia is a college town, so the second station probably has the advantage with that portion of the population. But WWNU's coverage is much greater.

Fair enough...BTW...Is Columbia home to the University Of South Carolina? I don't know South Carolina (only traveling through there years ago on a road trip).

How does WUSC factor into the WWNU/WXRY equation?
If WWNU takes too many listeners away from WXRY, a simple flip to Americana based AAA might be all they need to stay sharp.

WXRY is an LPFM.  Do they even subscribe to Arbitron?
