Dance songs that should have been huge hits
« on: July 01, 2012, 11:37:50 AM »

What songs do you think should have had more massive airplay? The first one that comes to mind is Dirty Talk by Wynter Gordon. The lyrics probably kept it from being embrace by the mainstream.

I think this incredibly catchy one should have been a bigger hit within the Dance format itself:

Daniela "You and I"

I don't see how a track like that couldn't be a Top 40 smash as well.

Good Choice Salad. Here is another selection. I got to see her at the HOB in Downtown Disney (Orlando). She put on a great performance.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCFu4-FHYn4&feature=related

Too many to list.  I would go back as far as 1992 in terms of what I thought should have been hits.

But I'll sum it up as this, I was hoping that the Eurodance wave would have caught on in the U.S. the same way it did in Canada with the music played on Toronto's Energy 108 back then.  For those of you that want that taste of what I'm talking about, listen to http://www.djfm.ca/ on Sunday between 8AM - 8PM (Eastern) for the DJFM Flashback Sunday.  A lot of those should have been hits.

To be honest...The reason why they were/are not hits...It didn't make the impression of the "pop chart". Dance charts would put them at number 1..Yes it is true.

Watch out BJ Steigner those are fighting words around here. Grin

I actually do agree with you. As much as I like all the songs listed, for the exception of a few, they don't have the formulaic, pop structure that makes it catchy (memorable) enough to be hits. This is why the Rihannas',Ushers,Flo Ridas Pitbulls etc are owning the "dance" sound on the pop charts. It's not that corporate don't understand Dance. They actually do and that's why they get the best Dance producers for their pop acts.

Now THOSE are fighting words!  Cheesy

I know we can get into an entire debate on "dance" vs. "rhythmic" here but you do have artists that are pure dance that DO sing, and sing good, but corporate is ignoring them.  Let's face it, Rihanna and Usher established themselves as Pop/R&B artists FIRST.  Flo Rida did rap.  Pitbull MAY be the closest towards starting out as dance by using 75, Brazil Street for "Calle Ocho" but he is still a rapper.  They all jumped on to the dance side because it's hot right now.  But guaranteed, once this cycle goes they are all going to abandon it for the R&B sounds they came through in the first place.
