New Format for KWLO Waterloo
« on: July 02, 2012, 06:22:03 PM »

At midnight July 1, KWLO-AM 1330 in Waterloo changed formats from Oldies using the Dial Global Kool Gold service to ESPN Radio.  This is the first major change that has been made by new owner Woodward Communications.  KWLO already carries some sports as it is the home of University of Northern Iowa women's basketball and volleyball.  The music that was heard on KWLO can be heard for the most part between Classic Hits sister station KOKZ (Cool 105.7) as well as Fife Communications Oldies station KDNZ-AM (Cruisin' 1250) and AC sister station KCVM (93.5 The Mix).

This move has been speculated ever since Woodward took over ownership from Bahakel earlier this year.  KWLO will now compete with Fife's KCNZ (1650 The Fan) which is affiliated with Fox Sports Radio.

From a historical perspective KWLO, formerly KWWL-AM, was a Top 40 powerhouse from the late 50's through the 70's.

Also historically, Oldies 1250 KDNZ changed their calls back to KCFI.
