WVPO

Was just wondering what's going on with WVPO these days. Used to like the station when I lived up that way and almost took a job there years back, but am now out of the area and just wondered what their programming is and what's going on with the station (staff, programming, etc.).  Thanks.

About five years ago, WVPO was running a satellite Oldies format along with national and local high school sports.  More recently, they have been running Don Imus in the Morning, Dr. Joy Browne middays and Dave Ramsey afternoons.  The rest of the day and weekends are also syndicated talk.  There is zero local content of any kind.

They even got rid of Bob Mathews, who used to read the local news during certain times of the day. I don't even notice WVPO exists anymore. I don't think anyone listens to it except grumpy old men into politics.

Maybe O/T.   But might there be some signal degradation at issue?   Or has the noise level gotten that monstrous in,  say,  the past fifteen years alone?

See,   even with the tiny signal they were alotted,   WVPO was a daytime regular back in the 60's where we lived,  in Eastern Queens NYC.    We were about 70-75 miles east of WVPO.   

Of course,  that reception was off a good DX radio.    However,   the same receiver quality was available over here in NEPA  (58 miles west of WVPO) when we moved in 20 years ago.  WVPO came in 'okay' back then.     But no longer.    Just now,   they are barely audible.

(If you draw a direct line between Hazleton and Pottsville on that map,    get halfway between the two cities and then move the cursor a few miles to the left,   toward that little gaggle of cities,   that's us)

I agree, the WVPO signal has diminished moderately through the years.
I am surprised it could be heard in Queens, given the proximity of the WNYC signal
 at 830 Kc back in the day.

I have not been able to get away from the fluorescent static from an unknown source today to check the programming, but the schedule described by EasyBakeOven is the way it sounded the last time I was in the vicinity of Stroudsburg .

Thanks for the info. It's sort of a shame that some of these signals are just being sort of thrown away.

VPO's owner Multicultural Broadcasting, moved from 449 Broadway a year ago this month. They're now at 27 William Street, New York, NY 10005 home to WKDM,  WNSW, WPAT and WZRC studios.

The FCC info I see shows Nassau as still operating WVPO, unless there was a very recent change.  You can really thank Nassau for being the one who really ruined a station that provided a true local info based format to that area.  And with what radio is aviklable in that area, they could have still done more with it then what they are doing now.  Anyone know whats happening with 960?  Their time for being silent is soon to be running out.  Nassaus attention to engineering matters certainly isn't anything to be proud of.

I wouldn't be surprised if in their situation, they would just let the clock run out and give back the license. Maybe they'll try to dump it on... I mean donate it to... some charity or something as a write-off. If they were to do that, would the clock start over for new owners?
