KDWN and TuneIn
« on: July 14, 2012, 01:15:36 PM »

Why is Beasley pushing TuneIn? They already blew money on their own mobile apps with custom ad insertion. Why waste their money? Or does this have something to do with non-radio ratings?

I heard that Beasley has some sort of profit sharing contract with tunein.  I'm pretty sure I saw that in the trades somewhere a couple weeks ago.  It is being promoted on their FM's too.

I believe they are pushing the TuneIn app, because their talkradio competitor CBS radio -- KXNT, is pushing their I Heart Radio app heavily. Everybody wants to get more listeners anyway they can!

KXNT is on CBSs radio.com. iheartradio is owned by Clear Channel. It does have some non-CC stations on it, but none are CBS.

Kent Davenport could be the sponsor.

This is more about the digital dashboard than anything else. lots of stations have their own apps and there is a strategy behind that, but radio stations also want to be part of the apps that are being pre-programmed into the new digital dashboards in cars (Like Toyota Entune, Ford Sync, Hyndai Blue Link & Cadillac Cue.) Google them and you will see that many of the new car in-dash systems don't actually have a hard wired radio. It's more like an ipad screen that comes loaded with a digital radio, GPS, phone connect, internet browser & pre-programmed apps like I Heart Radio, Pandora & Tune In Radio. Getting individual radio apps pre-programmed in the car will need a huge amount of nationwide buzz or a huge amount of money for the car makers. (maybe both!)

You would think having an endless amount of out of state and internet only stations available on a car digital dashboard would hurt local radio, even if some local stations are on the app.

It will hurt local radio in the short term.  But it would hurt local radio even more if they weren't available on these popular apps.  Eventually internet streams will show up in a bigger way in PPM because of the popularity of TuneIn and iHeartRadio.  I'm sure we'll be hearing about Beasley, Lotus, Kemp and maybe some of the other companies in town signing deals with iHeartRadio.  CBS has their own and they'll try to hold out as long as possible.  But eventually they'll be in.
