WIXY/WIXZ
« on: July 14, 2012, 04:30:26 PM »

Food For Thought.  WDOK 1260  was Purchaced for $2.18 M. along with WDOK Fm in Oct.1965. WMCK in dec 1968 for $400,000. The WIXY / WIXZ Saga's!

WIXY succeeded in Cleveland in dethroning WKYC with its 50,000 signal and first rate personalities like Jim Runyon. WIXZ did not dethrone KQV.  Thoughts?

Bad night-time signal (even worse than KQV's) and trying to do it on the cheap.

Here are a couple of reasons why KQV beat WIXZ.
  1. Jim Quinn vs Terry Lee. No Contest. While Terry had his followers, Quinn was huge back then.
  2. Play the hits. KQV had a fairly tight playlist while WIXZ had a huge list. Too many non-hit records.
  3. Mike McCormick. Mike was a superior program director.
  4. KQV Pittsburgh, WIXZ McKeesport. KQV was positioned as the Pittsburgh station and always positioned WIXZ as that McKeesport station. Even with an office in Gateway Center, it was tough to sell WIXZ because of that image.

Was 1360 still WIXZ when 1320 flipped to 13Q and did beat KQV?  Was WTAE a factor too?

It would have been tough for WIXZ to actually beat KQV in the ratings, considering that they were still a station licensed to McKeesport, and had a Mon Valley nightime signal.  But they did take some of KQV's audience in the 1969-73 era, and brought in some heavy air talent like Dick "Wild Child" Kemp and Chuck Dunaway.  Terry Lee was the only holdover from the WMCK days.
Oh, and of course, the stations did have something in common - Rush Limbaugh (aka Jeff Christie).

I can remember listening to WIXZ in the early '70's and hearing their catchy jingle, "1360....Wicks-Zee, Rockin' Gold!"
