Way back in the late 70's, I went to Hal for a job when he was at KPLX. Even though he's a distant cousin, the rat refused to hire me. Which speaks to his wisdom in addition to his longevity.

One of the best natured, naturally funny, and most authentic people ever on radio. Happy anniversary, cuz.

I worked for a radio station several years ago but currently have no desire to go back. Having grown up in Dallas, I have a lot of memories about Dallas radio that I love sharing with other readers of this forum.

I agree Jody.  I switch between your show and his...very funny characters he has...I wonder how many people he has doing those voices.  Although I think the jockey character is done by Hawkeye at KSCS.

Actually, many of the voices you hear (including, I suspect, the jockey voice) are done by Midnight Trucking overnight host Eric Harley. You'll hear Eric also doing "This Reporter", "Natural Howard" and others.A former production director does Sam From Sales and Willie Landum. Yet another person does President Bush. I think he has 3 or 4 folks doing voices for him. And, most of the jokes are still written by Hal and producer Sean Chastain...sometimes minutes before the bit airs.

Wow. Thanks for that info. I absolutely love "Sam from Sales" and "Willie Landum," plus the other characters he's done. It's a delight to learn that Hal writes those jokes, and even more to know that they're written almost off-the-cuff. They are the closest thing I know to old radio comedy, using running gags and the jokes adhering to a certain format. The jokes work so well not only because they're just funny, but hearing Hal's and Dan's cracking up.

Does anyone know "Sam's" e-mail address? I would love to shoot him an e-mail telling him how much I love his stuff. There's no link to an e-mail address on the BAP site, so I may just have to send a snail mail letter.

Thanks!

Glad to be able to give you some insight. I worked in the building (and some of the time for WBAP) for around 7 years...

I think your best bet to get email to Sam From Sales...is through Hal Jay:

Good luck!

As do I.
Two of the best shows on the radio.

Hal is absolutely wonderful.  You can get it all from his show.
Hal and Jody are the two people who can really start your day off right.

Thanks Jody!
And I really wish Hal would come on r-i.  Hey Mr. Crowder, let him now about us.

And let's just hope that some idiot within ABC's forthcoming new ownership won't see fit to drop Hal over his salary.  He earns every penny of it.  If Hal worked for CBS/Infinity, he'd already been kicked out on his duff in the streets a month ago with no remorse from the company.  How long Hal can defy the industry trend is yet to be seen.  He's the last of the good guys around here, and I just hope he gets the privilege to decide for himself when he's ready to step down and retire.

Anyone remember Hal back at the old KBUY in the early 70s?  Seems like he left the area for a while, and came back at PD at the newly-formatted KPLX at the end of 1979.  He and Siegel teamed up there, and WBAP brought both over in early 1981.  Too bad Sieg overvalued himself and split for The Ranch.  I don't know that he's working at all right now, or has in several years.
