BOB FM in Austin

Hey guys,

Had the chance to listen to Bob FM in Austin over the weekend.  I must say that I was pretty impressed with the programing.  I have heard Jack in Dallas as well, but I think Bob kept things more interesting.  Contrary to popular belief I think this playlist was nothing like KHPT.  The music was much more diverse and come to think of it, I don't think I heard one Eagles or Journey song the whoole weekend!  If I had been tuned in to "The Best of the 80s and More" I'm quite confident "open Arms" or Faithfully" would have spun at least once or twice.

Just my opinion.

I agree, but I think Bob is more interesting because it's in Austin, which is more open to music than Dallas.  When Houston gets  avariety hits format, I hope its more like Bob, but I'm afraid it will be more like Jack.

I am a bit confused because I am from the business end of this business, not the programming end.  What is the difference between Jack and Bob?

I agree with you guys!  I really like BOB in Austin.  I've listened to JACK Online from Dallas, and I think they are two completely different stations.  

The voiceover guy is the same, but he's funnier on BOB than on JACK (I've never listened to the actual "radio" version of Jack though-just the online version which I believe is different).  

As far as specific programming goes, I really can't pinpoint the difference between Bob and Jack (at least the Austin and Dallas versions of each).  Bob seems to have a wider playlist (IMO).  Really, I don't get to hear Bob much.  I just pick up 103.5 when I can from Houston.  I only go to Austin occassionally (unfortunately--I wish I could go there more often!).  

I think the little fill-in liners are funny on Bob.  They seem to keep them somewhat fresh.  I like the one that goes something like:

"Bob's mom is really excited about her son's new station!...Okay, she doesn't get out that much."

They are more interesting than hearing the same jazzed up liners we have on our Houston stations.  

Yeah, I do think Austin ends up with a better product musically than Dallas, or for that matter, Houston.

Me being here Near Austin most of the time durring the week, and recieving most all of Central Texas radio, Bob has its momemnts, I like them a lot one day and one day they can be realy bad.  For the most part they seem to play 80's and 90's  Some stuff like mix plays,  I liked them in the begining more then I do now, they are trying more to be like 96.5.

Jack is more of a rockers station--that is how they lean. Even with their "playing what we want" slogan, the slant is apparent.

"When we play rock, paper, scissors--we choose, rock."

"We like to rock, oh yeah."

"We're like the rockin' jukebox you used to put money in at the bar."

--These liners are on Jack and I have not heard them on Bob.

While these stations are from corporate blood, they are supposed to be programmed differently in each city and slant towards that city's target audience.

Beyond that--the majority of what they play is the same.

A lot of 80's rock, some 80's dance, lite AC, Seal-type R&B, the occassional current hit, Dixie Chicks, some 90's rock and I have even noticed a few old school rap songs in Jack's playlist.
