WBUD and Unforgettable Favorites
« on: January 29, 2006, 11:30:11 AM »

I've been reading posts about a switch over to satellite programming on WBUD...

I'm still not convinced it's going to happen.  It's been over a month since since they dropped the personalities.  Normally such a switch to a satellite feed wouldn't take this long.  In most of these situations, such a switch happens almost simultaneously.

Another interesting factor...WBUD has expanded and (or) tweaked it's playlist within the past month.  I have heard songs on the station within the past month that I haven't heard before on WBUD.  If a switch to satellite is imminent, why tweak the playlist?

Perhaps they are following in the footsteps of Philly's Sunny 104.5 and Ben FM 95.7...full automation without plans of a satellite format.

If this is the case, they need to fix the last 3 minutes of the hour.  Two songs playing over top of each other (one vocal and one instrumental) to backtime to the newsbreak (which no longer exists) is very unprofessional.

This to me is the only indication that a change may be taking place.  Either that, or they simply haven't tweaked the station 100% quite yet.

Local automation w/ TOH network news?

A little off topic from the original post ...

I once worked at a MOYL station, which used instrumentals, custom-made to be 2.5 minutes, which the live jock would start, potted down, at :57:20 past the hour, leaving ten seconds for legal ID and slogan before network news. When the previous song ended, jock fades up instrumental.

What do you do if you want to have local automation and carry a network newscast?

One solution I can think of: ABC offers (I think) its Direction newscast at :50. Could the automation record the ABC newscast at :50, and play it back as close as possible to the top of the hour?

What if you want to carry CBS/CNN/AP or Fox live at the top of the hour? Can you do this with automation without "cheating" with an instrumental?

What I would suggest they do (depending on their automation software) is have a couple of instrumentals scheduled as the last couple elements of the hour and use an automatic "Fade" just before the Legal-ID, say at 59:50. It definitely IS cheating but from a listener standpoint I can't imagine any complaints unless you REALLY wanted to hear the last :30 of "Love is Blue" by Paul Mauriat. If WBUD is airing (2) songs as they near the TOH then I would venture to say that one of the songs, the instrumental, is the one that is automatically triggered by the software. They need to identify the glitch that is casuing them both to overlap. If they DO know about it, I can't see why they wouldn't correct the issue unless there was more to it.

With a Satellite Service this wouldn't be an issue since there are Live Jocks (whatever coast they may be on) manning the controls...not so easy to do when ALL the work is in the hands of the computer.

Just curious- does WBUD still carry newscasts at all?  I'm not that familiar with the station, but on another Millennium AM station just up the dial- WADB 1310 Shore Country- they dropped their CNN newscasts during the week, but I've still heard them on weekend mornings (not that I'm a Shore Country fan; just flippin' through the stations...)

They would HAVE to know about it...it happens EVERY HOUR now.  It's virtually unlistenable.
