Would WHTT Consider Jack Armstrong?

Now that Jack Armstrong is available, would WHTT consider hiring him for 7pm to 12midnight?  He already has the ISDN connection, right?  WHTT is already known for employing some of the area's heritage announcers -- Bill Lacy, Jim Pastrick and Harv Moore.  Imagine adding Armstrong to the line-up.  Plus, the music WHTT plays is what Armstrong was playing during his first tour of duty at KB.  He didn't seem to fit with some of the '50s tunes KB was playing before this recent change.  I think it would be great!  I know Jim Pastrick reads this board.  Jim, how about "YOUR LE-E-E-E-E-EADER" on WHTT?

Why not? 'HTT will already pick up an extra share and a half or more by inheriting all of 'KB's music audience, and that would just further build their AQH and cume. Of course, while that would help ABC/Citadel's local fortunes, it's hard to imagine how they could match the help they already got yesterday...from Entercom.

You see, if 'KB as a talker gets any audience at all, it will take it from other talk stations, just like WROC grabbed its modest audience from WHAM and from essentially no one else in Rochester. That means it will get it from its own corporate stablemate WBEN, which had been the only commercial news/talk game in town of any consequence up to now. Entercom used this strategy of slicing away at format leaders in Rochester, to cut into WHAM just enough to help its country station WBEE take over the top spot in the Arbitrons and the extra national spot business that comes along with being market leader. It's ironic that the same move that Entercom used to help itself in Rochester, it's now using against itself in Buffalo. Meanwhile ABC/Citadel, which will also be cutting fractionally into WBEN's audience by launching libtalker WHLD while having absolutely no impact at all on its own cluster, can look forward to vaulting into second place with WHTT...and CBS can breathe easier as it seeks to hold on to the overall market lead with WYRK.

If I were Entercom CEO David Field sitting and watching this from corporate HQ in Philly, I'd be on the phone to Buffalo and saying, "guys, what in HELL are you thinking? I killed off WGR as a talker to protect WBEN...now you're undoing all the careful long term strategic plans we made for this market years ago?"

I'd be surprised if they brought Armstrong in as a full-time 7-Midnight guy. Jack isn't cheap, and I heard that the VT show he did on KB required daily local production time in order to make it sound right. Besides, I'm not sure that the audience that WHTT aspires to would find a steady diet of Jack palatable. Jack is much stronger with men than women, and Citadel (like Mars) needs women to balance the male-dominated numbers of 97-Rock.

It would be fun to hear Jackson get the party going on a Friday or Saturday night, though. Maybe 10PM to 2AM VT'd by The Man. That's what I'd call "Happy Hour".

Regarding the legendary Jackson Armstrong, a few months ago I was having a conversation with Brian J. Walker about the potential for Jack doing a syndicated show much like Tom Kent and Shotgun Tom Kelly. We agreed that's where he'd really maximize his potential. A win-win for him and the radio stations that picked up his (weekly) show which could be produced from his home in North Carolina.

Well on XM's 60's on 6 he's known as Terry "Motormouth" Young but it's Jackson Armstrong alright.  He sounds great too. I'm listening to him right now, thanks to DirecTV.

From time to time he does a recreation of a big top 40 station.  This Friday he'd doing KOIL.  I wonder if he will someday do KB?  Maybe that's too close to home.

The question is if satellite radio can see the value in this why can't commercial radio?

Same style - but definitely two different people. Terry's career was spent mainly in Philadelphia. He was a big name at the old WCAU-FM, with stops at WIOQ and WEJM along the way as well. He's quite a few years younger than Jackson, also.

Mike, I'm surprised at you!

Clearly, Mr. Young, a Jack Armstrong wannabe, spent some time in his youth listening to Big Jack.  It's unfortunate that XM is settling for a cheap imitation when they could probably have the real deal if they came up with the right money.

Jack Armstrong is, without question, one of the real legends of Top 40 radio!
