Local News in HD
« on: March 30, 2006, 09:50:49 AM »

I am new to HD, having just gotten an HD set and I see that Channel 7 in LA has all their local news in HD (including the remote feeds). That must have cost them a bundle but the results are spectacular making them my choice for the local news. Any idea when the other local stations might get the hint.

I saw the KABC HD news a few weeks ago myself.  It's unlike anything I've ever seen, and I have to give them credit for doing it right.  Best looking local news product I've witnessed, excellent graphics and sound.  You're right -- it did cost them a mountain of money...but KABC makes a mountain of money off local news.

The new KCBS/KCAL studios under construction in Studio City will be completely HD, but they won't open until next year I think.  KTTV/KCOP had the first full digital newsroom in the market, but Fox has not made a full HD commitment on the local level yet.  KNBC/KVEA/KWHY will eventually get there; NBC-Uni is gradually converting all of their facilities but concentrating on network production first.  KTLA will probably get there last...Tribune is notoriously slow on getting new gear to the local stations.

Agree....after I got my new HiDef TV, I only watch ABC 7 News. I thought others would jump the bandwagon sooner, but I guess not.

No one in Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego or any of the smaller markets.  KABC is out in front on this one by MILES.

Agreed, but I'd look for KXTV or KGO to follow suit relatively soon.  Gannett's been the most aggressive in converting their local news operations to HD (first KUSA, then WUSA, KSDK, WXIA, and soon KARE), so I wouldn't expect KXTV to be too far behind.

KGO has Sky 7 HD, so maybe HD news on KGO isn't that far away either.

Not up here in the SF Bay Area that I've heard. I don't have HD, because I bought my last TV in 1996,  so I'm good.
