I also thought WJYL was top 40 right before WDJX began.
Despite ratings, I-U fired every paleface in their J-Town building and blew up the station.  ‘Probably worked out in the long-run for those ‘JYL folks cause 99.7 ‘DJX was soon to follow with way more money and watts

When you mention paleface, are you referring to "White" people.  After the Inter-Urban takeover in 1984, the staff at WJYL remained predominately white for a good while.  At the start of the I-U takeover at WJYL, a few people part-timers from the the former Top 40 WJYL remained with the I-U takeover as full-timers.  Also, Vernon Wells, the first PD for the I-U WJYL was "paleface."

WJYL wasn't really fully urban until 1987 when Paul Bather became the GM.  Before the Paul Bather days, WJYL had a wide range playlist on their Adult-oriented format ranging from the pop sounds of Phil Collins to the rhythmic sounds of Freddie Jackson, without any hard edge rock or rap.  During the first two years of the Inter-Urban takeover of WJYL, most of the urban listeners remained with WLOU which had a more urban sound. Due to WLOU's higher numbers, WJYL began to segue into a deeper urban format in the summer of 86 into 1987 and began to surpass WLOU. Tony Fields skewed WJYL's format into a younger demographic when he became PD for the station in late 1987, giving the station it's highest numbers ever by the Fall 1988 book.

As we drift away from the original topic........

WJYL was doing well.  Then it changed to beautiful music with live jocks.

They stunted for do not know how long with the song don't let the sun catch you crying and then became sunny 101 if my memory serves me correct. And george lindsey was the program director.that station was the first station i ever heard mannheim steamroller. If they were doing so well as urban i wonder why they flipped?

Even though it had numbers, WJYL had little advertising support.  The odd thing was the birth of a beautiful music station, with live jocks no less, in the late eighties.  WVEZ had already evolved to soft AC (Transtar Format 41) and the easy listening instrumental format was on the decline across the country.

I don't remember how long WLSY did beautiful music.

WJYL never did that well under Inter-Urban or under anyone else for that matter.  During the first two years under Inter-Urban, WJYL struggled in the ratings. During those years, the format was too pop-oriented to compete with urban WLOU and too rhythmic to be a strong competitor with Top 40 stations WDJX and WLRS or AC station WRKA.  In 1988, WJYL's numbers increased when Tony Fields skewed the format to a younger audience with a playlist containing 70 percent rhythmic currents and 30 percent Top 40.  However, the station lost a tremendous amount in revenue and could not stay afloat. The format was pulled in January 1989. After a full week of stunting a different song each day with the word sun in the title, easy listening replaced WJYL as WLSY-FM (Sunny 101.7) and that format ended two years later. Someone mentioned that the WLRS call letters are cursed due to the recent lack of success of formats carrying those call letters.  It seems that the 101.7 FM frequency has that same curse since no one has been able to create any long-term success on that frequency.  The frequency also has been through different formats as a Shelbyville station.

It seems like the entertainment business radio to be exact seems to follow the theory "if its not broke break it" not everyone but alot do.Just look at what cbs has done acroos the country with flipping there stations to free fms like the zone in phoenix and wxrk k rock in new york and wcbs how they flipped from oldies to a jack fm and look at these stations numbers!!!Not to good.Look at whoever owned kj-100 did flipping that to magic if that had stayed chr( instead of playing musical formats) which it should have it would be i think 27 years old but i digress.

It started as "The New JJ 100".

Liners and everything were JJ 100.

Management was afraid of the connection with JJ Walker (kid Dy no mite) as making the station seem like an African American station.

Lateral replays.  Remember those?

CC Matthews.  E Alvin Davis.  Didn't they start KJ100?

ELO, Led Zep, just a really good sounding station.
