oh, i remember them well. i vaguely remember the great pearl river jump show you're talking but do not remember if the jump was made or not . I remember their last morning and the parade of all the characters saying there goodbyes. I was saddened and felt like life long old friends were departing. we were very lucky back in those days to have several good radio personalties in Jackson and Burt and Kurt were certainly at the top of the list. If I'm not mistaken, Kurt may have done some local radio advertisments here in Jackson recently, posssibly as redwood? anybody know for sure or is it my imagination?

Hey Flytrap! I have a copy of that bit and would be glad to send it to you. It may be too long to send as an MP3. It would depend on how much your email will allow. I'll see if I can find it if you'd like. John

Little known fact (unless he talked about it and I missed it), prior to radio, Bob was a church music minister. He gave me mulitple incredible breaks, and under his tutelage I learned valuable life lessons, several the hard way.

If I remember correctly, Rob Grayson's voice is one of the first voices (if not THE first) you'll hear on the "Bulldozer Jump" bit! Hope all is well for you in Memphis, Rob!

I want to remember that Kurt (or B&K or JDX) was a supporter of the Jackson Zoo. Am I correct in remembering him at one or more JDX remotes out there?

When I was there in the mid to late 70's, JDX did only 1 remote. That was at the Jackson Zoo to raise money to buy an orangatang. We had a tremendous crowd and actually raised enough to buy 2. We called it "JDX Zoo Day". We all were there in the JDX Dunking Booth!

Ah, the dunking booth at Zoo Day. An experience not to forget. Really fun when the Jackson Mets(local minor league baseball team at the time) players came up to dunk us. Over and over and over....Long day. Zoo Day became a pretty big deal for awhile.

The names of the orangatangs were "Red" and "Fern" Wood, named after the burt and kurt characters. The two orangatangs were at the zoo for many years after that. There was a sign on their pen that had their names and it also mentioned that they were bought by JDX. I'm not sure if the original Orangatangs are still their or not, since I'm not sure how long they live. I believe the Orangatangs were young when they got them around 1976 or so, but they would be quite old if they were still living.

Having had my memory somewhat restored... the voices on the Pearl River Jump were Bob Burton, myself, Dennis Jon Bailey, and mostly Kurt Kilpatrick. I don't imagine I produced it, but Dennis Jon Bailey and I would sort of "pool" our production and crank it out as a team. We also did bits which ran on his show at night. Dennis did lots of phone bit stuff, and not long after leaving JDX he was at WRKO, Boston, working with Harry Nelson.
