Brother Bear is right.

If you're not from here, and damn near 60 you don't have a clue what the "Big Ape" and the "Mighty 690" was all about.

Don't really have to be from Jax to understand the real APE.  Back in the day various markets had stations that were icons.  Being from Ind we had all the AM powerhouses WLS/WCFL and WOWO plus many of the smaller market stations that we're great radio.  Then FM started clobbering the AMs with all the great underground stations.  So it's not just the APE it's alot of great american radio in the days.  U just have to sit back with a smile and drift back when radio was radio and PDs actually programmed the place not some crazy consult somewhere in Cincy.  Atleast us old timers can sit back with a smile for then and a frown for now.

Anyone else put 2+2 together in their search for a PD?  A certain someone from the region who just left a gig elsewhere may well be in line for the gig.  Anyone else catch on to this?

Oh yes I remember the great days of radio when William Conrad and I would sit around the station slobbering all over double cheeseburgers and fries and remember the good old days.  Hey - pull it out - that was then this is now.  As the GoodFellas would say - forget about it

Have we forgotten the signal? People listened to Ape all up and down the southeast coast for years.... And even after the change to FM, Ape has been dominate for 20 years.  Change is always painful. But, it's necessary to stay alive! Ape made a concious decision to make some major changes over the past year. There will always be a ratings dip after major changes. Then a new era will come. None of this should be a suprize to anyone who REALLY knows radio. Z100 has had highs and lows. KIIS LA has had highs and lows.

By the way, the new Ape PD is JR Ammons from KMXV FM (Mix 93.3) in Kansas City and Star 94, Atlanta. He's a good guy.

In VA, I would listen to WAPE sign off back when they were a 25,000 watt daytimer. The ape call was the last audio before the plate switch was thrown. Was fortunate to work there from 1978-1980. Cool place.

Here's a great history:

On the Wikipedia site "The Powers" above have tagged the WAPE article as needing cleaning up!  Does anybody know what they are talking about.  Kaplan was always talking about "Cleaning up" but I don't know what they mean???
