Lets Talk Concerts
« on: June 19, 2007, 04:08:38 PM »

With the Summer seanon upon us lets talk NTR.  KWOD drops the ball on there summer thing, rumors have The Zone Concert well under sold, and Jack's show is just a zz top show with the pretenders that every jack station is claiming once it lands near them.

How much longer until stations take 98 Rock's approach and do away with Station Concerts.  It's my personal opinion that they actualy hurt ratings more than help.  For 2 months leading to a station concert all jocks are required to talk about the concert and thats it.  How many different ways can you say only one bottle of water per person?

A lot of it is due to the fact that most new bands are mediocre at best, especially live, and fewer people are willing to pay to see them perform.  There are many established bands out there, but they want increasingly ridiculous sums of dinero to play, and when you try to put together a decent enough bill that might draw a respectable turn-out, you're talking serious money.  In order to generate that kind of money you need a very large venue, like the amphitheater in Marysville (whatever the hell they're calling it these days)... problem is it's in the middle of absolutely nowhere and a long drive for most of the Sacramento audience.  There are very few stations in the country that are still able to successfully pull off a major station concert... for most stations it's nowhere near the hassle.  And honestly, most of these shows were never that great to begin with... Day in the Zone was always a weak line-up, KWOD's was pretty hit and miss, KRXQ had a good run for a while but was competing with Ozzfest for format-appropriate acts and wound up having to scrap it.

really it all depends on the line up.
i work at live 105 san francisco, and we have 2 a year. one in the summer and one in winter.
they always sell out, if not come very close.
summer show is at the shoreline, which is a long drive for everyone in the bay area except for those in the south bay.
you just have to get those bands that are gonna sell out.
thats the only real secret.

I will agree with this, but there have been a couple good line ups for Day in the Zone from what I can remember... and these days that ain't much.  Didn't they have INXS last year with the new singer when they had like 2 hit singles?  I also remember Collective Soul was at one too when they were really big.  But for the most part, yeah it is hit or miss with them too.  This year's line up did suck, but no doubt it was better than what KWOD was trying.

Eagle's Mock-Rock concerts have been great the last couple years.  But long gone are the days when they brought in the classic rockers for the concert (anyone remember their Kansas/Stephenwolf/Tubes show at Sac State?).  And it is true there is no way to compete with Ozzfest or Gigantour or Vans Warped Tour for KWOD and KXRQ.

I heard that V101's show with Morris Day & the Time sold out, is that true?
