Help for Dave
« on: August 02, 2005, 09:03:01 AM »

Since the TLJ vs Barnes thread was nipped in the bud. And I respect Jay's decesion to do so. I was wondering what you guys, and gals think would help DAVE-FM pull itself out of the basement. Only stipulation "NO FORMAT CHANGE".

It's a station that demographically, I should be liking.  For whatever reason, things that work elsewhere seem to not work in Atlanta (for instance, John Boy & Billy).  iPod Radio as a format may be another example of such a thing.  But since I'm not allowed to change formats, I'd say put a funner morning show on vs. a "hipper than thou" approach.

To be honest hang the dj's..  ALL OF THEM..
Bring the Falcons more into the mix with some Wes Durham..

I think Steve Craig would be more in line there.. I like the music, not the personalities..

I've professed my "like" for Steve before-- best in the market (however, that says very little).

I'm not even sure if I can NAME the Dave jocks.  I know Mara because she was there when it was Z93 but, as stated by someone before, she is less enjoyable to listen to now.

I don't know if there's fear or apathy or cronic floating around the station, but the jock's seem about as engaging as game show hosts.  But, oddly, in the EXACT same manner.  Does that make sense?  Makes me think it may not be them.

I've tried a few times to get into Dave, but the playlist is just too narrow for my tastes.  It seems like every time I flip over they're playing Dire Straits or Tom Petty.  Double the playlist and get a little less predictable.

Mara does sound like someone is on the other side of the glass ready to hit her knuckles anytime she tries to be funny or engaging. Eric rattles off some non sequitirs and plays the next song. I do like Margot though. Barnes he is the robot he is, boring, droll and self-absorbed. In general they all seem so impersonal.

The playlist is hurting in my opinion. I llike Mark Knopfler's(Dire Straits) new album but must I hear it every hour. It seems to be skewing more older classic rock again but maybe it is because I just do not listen that much anymore.

Steve Craig, I hear, was wooed by Dave last year but he decided to stay with 99X and sign a new contract.

I totally agree with this observation about the music skewing older. When Dave first flipped on, it seemed to stick to 99x's bread and butter playlists from the 90's and not venture any further than 80's.  These days, seems like they're spinning far more classic stuff than they used to- almost seems like an older mix than they were playing in Z's last days (This is just my opinion, and I'm not in the biz, so I don't have statistics on this... I'm just stating what I have perceived).

I don't really like the jocks much either.. I was hoping that they'd put TRG on in the mornings (that idea fizzled when All Access arrived). So that's my vote.. Go back to the original Dave playlist, expand it a bit, get better jocks, and hopefully TRG!

Morning show needs to make people laugh. The current cast is not capable of eliciting laughter. As for Eric in PM drive, I have no beef with him; he's fine. But he seems like a budget-saver. Typical nothing-to-say patter: "I hear Pearl Jam is back in the studio. We'll keep you posted on that..." Is it that hard to replicate what Steve Crieg does or are the jocks not given the leeway?
As for Mara, her appeal has always been her somewhat-scatterbrained unpredicatabiliy with a dash of not-too-evil sarcasm. Two years ago, she'd do 4 hilarious minutes going into a break; now she's staring out the window. I love the music, but personality always wins listeners, right?

DaveFM...Rock without Ratings!
« Reply #9 on: August 02, 2005, 07:19:22 PM »

Leave it to a guy with dark socks, and shiny shoes to F up a good idea. Can't we all look back and think about a guy who has power that ruined good things? If the bosses would let Margot do her thing, and let her program what she thinks would work, then Dave would do fine. All research and testing should be thrown out the window in this format. Hello!!! "Rock Without Rules!" The playlist is too narrow. Plain and simple! And the jocks are being told to shut up. Have some personality, play tons of different music, and maybe things will turn.
