Giants-Jets game not on in Hartford
« on: October 05, 2007, 06:03:48 AM »

Since the Giants-Jets game will at 1PM on Sunday (the same time as the Patriots Game), The Giants-Jets game will not be seen in Hartford. WFSB is showing The Patriots game. Joe Zone sports director of WFSB claims there is more interest in the Patriots and the station will always carry The Patriots.

If I wasn't working this Sunday I would be demanding that COX Cable temporarily pick up WCBS/2 so the Giants-Jets game would be seen.

Joe Zone can shove it. We're not even a Patriots secondary market (Providence is and that must-carry rule is for road games anyways). I do believe that we are a secondary Giants market, but since they're home in this case, that won't matter. What should have been done is for WFSB-DT to carry The Jets vs Giants on analog channel 3 (channel "3-1") and the Patriots game being carried on their "CBS 3" service for Springfield, MA (channel "3-2").

By the way, I thought COX of Meriden/Southington already carried WCBS-TV?

With WFSB and WSHM on the same digital signal, would the NFL even allow such a thing?

WSHM-LP (a.k.a. "CBS 3") has shown a different game from analog channel 3 before, although I don't think the Patriots were involved in either game.

I am a Pats fan, but that doesn't seem right.  Connecticut has historically been Giants' country.  The Pats are secondary and their main fan base within the state is in eastern CT - where Providence channels are received.

Clearly, this was a decision made by people who don't know anything about the CT audience.  Giants versus Patriots isn't even close in Connecticut - the Giants have been THE team shown there for 50 years or so.

By the way, the sports director's name is......Joe Zone?   I suppose his dad is named Twilight and mom is End.   Cheesy

They dropped it years ago. Long before my family moved from Bristol to Southington in 2003.

I believe FOX 61 has done the same thing. On the rare occasion FOX has a Patriots game at the same time as a Giants game they'll carry the Patriots on FOX 61. They claim the NFL will not allow them to broadcast the other game on CW-20. That shows how different the NFL is from the MLB. In the past a few times both the Yankees and Redsox had Saturday afternoon games and they got permission from the MLB to show the other game on CW-20.

But what's the deal?  Who are the suits in New York who figure that, because Connecticut is in New England, you MUST root for the Pats?  Is it the famous Manhattan myopia?

Ironically, there is a thread in the Northern NE board where one of our colleagues opined that the Red Sox should be heard on the radio throughout New England: "From Poultney to Presque Isle, from Providence to Pittsburg (NH)..."   I commented that it should be Greenwich instead of Providence and various replies indicated that I was dipping into Yankee territory there.

No offense was intended, I am sure.  It's just that many in New England tend to think of CT as New York territory!

The truth is that it's 50-50 for baseball and 70-30 (Giants) for football.  Too bad that the powers that be cannot figure it out.  I know from being a UConn alum.....

There is a Sox Radio Affiliate in Greenwich, CT it's 1490 WGCH. (Joined the network for the 2004 season) as did a New Haven affiliate WQUN 1220. Both claim that by joining the network is what caused The Sox to win The World Series that year.
