700WLW newscasters on WLWT news as reporters
« on: October 21, 2007, 08:27:01 PM »

Was today's usage of Andrew Setters the newest part of the WLW/WLWT synergy?  (He did a nice job by the way)

I think it's the first time talent from the radio end has been used on TV since the pre-Multimedia/AVCO breakup in the 70's.

i don't know, but i did notice that on the pre-noon news segments on WLW, they used pretty much the same copy and audio as did WLWT the night previous. when i noticed it i literally wondered aloud to my wife when we'd see a swap of talent - mixed media as it were. funny that it happened the same day. HEY, I GOT IT!!!!  Heres how we get CH 5 out of the news rating ashcan! We scrap the 12noon broadcast and replace it with  Grin THE 50/50 CLUB with SANDRA ALI! Simulcast with 700 live from the Orchid Room at the Netherland Hilton, ALL of Cincinnati's stay-at-home housewives (200+) will hang on her every word, give out great recipes, Complain about the poor service at the Kenwood Dillard's Dayspa  and spread the latest gossip about Pat Dewine overherd at Palamino's! That straping Jonathan Hawgood will deliver the news AKA Peter Grant. House singers Lisa Cooney & Brandi Srader will take the place of Marian Spellman & Ruby Wright and crooner MIKE MCCONNELL will have the girls fainting in the isles (while he pitches the new Fereini Jr 10% plan)! All while the SEG DENNISON trio Rocks Out! Now all we need are the new Bonny Lou and Rob Tanner,,,HUM. It will be THE MOST ORIGINAL REMAKE WLWT has seen since, oh I don't know, The Bionic Woman 3 weeks ago. Is that Tanya O'Rourke and Cammy Dierking
looking over their shoulder?

I was a little kid when I met Paul Dixon (Paul Baby) He always gave me the creeps. When WLWT did their 50 year look back on the years thing, Paul loved the women and would focus in on their legs. God those women were ugly!

Probably the beehive hairdos which were popular back then.
The other reason probably is most of them were from the opposite side of the river.
(ha chi-chi-chi-chi)

Paul Baby had a cult following...even with the repetition of things he did such as:

1. Paul shouting "ISN'T THIS THE DUMMEST TELEVISION SHOW YOU EVER SAW IN YOUR LIFE?"

2. "Everybody here gets a great big bag of Lay's Potato chips (audience cheer)
..that's the size you get right there." (holding a smaller school lunch sized bag)

3. Bruce Brownfield and his band apruptly going into a chourus of "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself A letter"  when Paul mentions " I just got a fan letter the other day....oh migawd...LETTERS!!!!"

4.Bruce Brownfield's drummer speaking into a microphone in the rear of his drum set in the corner instead of coming forward to a more accessible mike.

5. Paul and crew bowing their head and saluting the station manager whenever "Mr. Murphy" was mentioned.

6. Brownfield's band playing "Hot Time In the Old Town Tonight" (segging from his regular theme song which sounded somewhat similar to Benny Goodman's theme song "Let's Dance" after Paul Baby was introduced by Colleen or Bonnie Lou.

7. Upon entrance Paul says: "This is the most beautiful studio audience we have ever had yet!..."  upon which he gets out binoculars to scout out the women's legs...hence his title "Mayor of Kneesville."

8. The references made to expecting mothers as the ones who are "on the nest."

9. Paul introducing Coleen Sharp and Bonnie Lou by raising up their arms in ring announcer fashion announcing the winner..complete with a glimpse of Collen's or Bonnie Lou's raised skirts...both Colleen and Bonnie Lou were comparatively shorter in stature to Paul himself.

Brownfield's band appeared mostly on the Dixon show when the "lush" orcheastra filling in on occasion.

I remember from my distant (very distant) childhood that before the flowers Ruth's microphone had mike flags with the sponsor's logo. The flowers appeared if I recall correctly when they started local colorcasting.

I purchased the Paul Dixon Chicken Wedding video and the Channel Five memorial to Bob Braun. I miss a lot of the corny stuff they used to do on TV although I got a flashback in the 80's working with the public access producers here in The San Fernando Valley. Everybody thought they would be the next Letterman or Carson and being next to beautiful downtown Burbank they were sure their little shows would get them discovered. As access coordinator and studio manager I had to oversee those gems and a lot of them reminded me of local TV in the 50's and 60's.
