American League's Best . . .

That's ridiculous.  Joe and Jerry (WEEI Boston) are easily the best two in the business.

A friend of mine who is a native Chicagoan says he doesn't like Rooney.
Calls him John Looney. Me, I don't think he's bad...he was on
ESPN radio yesterday I believe, with Dave Campbell, calling
Yanks-Angels. And I agree with post below, Castiglione and Trupiano
for Red Sox radio are tough to beat. Can YOU believe it!

Yea, I am sure you have heard every other play by play team in the AL...stop making dumb statements without being able to back them up...that is why any award for best play by play team is a joke...I am sure the committee sits and listens to every game of every team tio decide who is best....give me a break

That's probably the best point. I spend most of my time in Northern California and am a long-time A's fan, and to me Bill King and Ken Korach are two of the most exciting play-by-play guys out there. On the other hand, I find Vin Scully to be one of the most boring- when he calls a play it's hard to tell if the Dodgers got a homer or got doubled up. He's very knowledgebale about the game and has seen a lot, but to rate him one of the best is silly.

All that said, I've only heard a handful of play-by-play guys outside of my California world. While I like the play calling of A's announcers Bill and Ken, I'm in no position to say that they are the best. But play-by-play calling is also a bit of an art form, and how do you give an award for the best art? Ultimately, each team's fans will almost always like their own play-by-play guys because, well, it's THEIR team.

A number of years back, I believe, Ken Korach substituted for John Rooney on weekend broadcasts for the White Sox.  Korach was doing minor league games in Las Vegas (I think)and word come in when Rooney was doing a national game of the week on TV.

I liked his broadcast style.

I remember a NY Post article a couple of months ago where the author described
his play-by-play as narcissistic.

Oh, by the way, not to be nitpicky, but it's "Yankees win! Thuh-uh-uh-uh...
Yankees win!!!"
