K104 "Interactive" Not
« on: November 04, 2007, 05:37:18 PM »

I have long been a fan of K104 and its dominance of the Dallas market (though I am now way out of its demographic).

However, I have to laugh when I see K104's "interactive" website which was clearly designed to keep up with its competitor KBFB-FM, which was "interactive" first. In my view a station simply isn't "interactive" if it DOESN'T STREAM. KBFB streams, K104 doesn't. Why can't Service pop for the streaming costs of its top-rated station in the nation's number 5 market? Think about it, how many other major market stations aren't streaming these days?

In the truly big markets - K104, KRNB, Hot 97 and WRKS NYC and KPWR are the only ones that come to mind beyond Radio One's new gospel FM in D.C. and the 2 Cleveland Radio One stations, which I expect will likely be streaming shortly.

Anyone remember back in the day (1997-2000 or so) when K104 was one of the first streamers of the major urban stations? It went from being a streaming pioneer to one of the last current holdouts from streaming the past several years.

It's about the Benjamins, as Skip CHEAT-em would love to say. The streaming was groundbreaking, but they had no reason to update it. There was no outcry from their listeners to do so, and no demand from the brass to investigate it. Radio One, if anything besides really cheap, has been above the bottom line when it comes to generating audience loyalty. Once PPM hits Big D, there may be avenues to capture online listening, but until then, The Beat is happy knowing they have the technology... and Skip will be happy knowing he has vicariously ruled another book.

C'est la vie.

Still, it is a bit odd that K-104 is the only major FM station (besides its sister 105.7) in Dallas not streaming these days. Probably not a good long-term decision to reach the youth. Don't get me wrong, I really like K-104. In fact I would like to listen to them beyond my visits to Dallas.

Maybe Service may be coming around...

From evidence on the Streamaudio.com website, Looks like KRNB Dallas will be streaming soon with Streamaudio as the provider

Well, looks like K-104 might finally be coming around after a LONG streaming absence. I think they are the last major commercial FM in Dallas not to be streaming.

They are now listed on the Streamaudio page, though a working stream could be weeks away (witness Hot 97 which has also been up there for months).

I very much look forward to hearing K104 away from Dallas again and having all 4 Dallas urban FMs and 2 of the Gospel AMs streaming. As for KKDA-AM, I love this station but I don't think it will ever happen.

I love KKDA as well, but Service(Ken Dowe and Chuck Smith) have treated the AM station like a redheaded step child.
