Wireless mic receiver antenna hookups
« on: November 08, 2007, 01:10:46 PM »

I will be installing 2 new wireless systems. I am aware of the Shure product that allows multiantenna hookups through a DA-type box. Are there any other options i.e. a splitter per antenna 'side' and a communications antenna perhaps? What are the implications of that type of setup?

We use two little whips on thye back of the receiver.  I notice all the sound guys use the Shure system with the panel antennas mounted on tripods on either side of the venue.  I suspect that they have found that to be the most reliable.

The frequencies used for wireless mics happen to be the same as those used for standard TV signals.  Sometimes you can use inexpensive TV distribution equipment with decent results.  Many times, it works OK, but remember it is very broad banded.  If you are in a congested RF area (like a major market) it may cause more problems than it solves.

If you want foolproof, the best bet is the distribution equipment that is available from the manufacturer of your wireless equipment.  Yes, it is expensive, but it usually works well, even under adverse conditions.

Understood-we rented 4 crappy lavs, and I ended up setting up for the next day at 3AM. I realized when I started getting that familiar raster hum that one of the mics was set to the frequency near or on LPTV channel 7 (170 mHz) here in Philly. The were off the air at setup, but on during show time. We got a refund for that one.

The only concern now is the Wi-Max annexing the former upper UHF channels.

I've used a mag mount antenna (for scanners) from Radio Shack for several wireless mic receivers.  It usually works great and set-up for the jocks is a breeze.

You use 2 per receive unit though, right? Or are you combining into one master antenna?
