Charlotte's Brand New Radio Station
« on: February 12, 2008, 10:56:34 AM »

Looks like we've got a new radio station!  It's Oldies 106.1.  I discovered it late this morning while surfing around the FM dial. Check it out and let's hear some thoughts.

Their website doesn't yet reflect the new format, nor does it redirect to a new website...

Same for their Wikipedia page...

I guess we could say that the station (WOLS/Waxhaw) has lowered the age of their target demo by a few years from what it was as Mix 106.1.

Apparently it's off the bird (Jones Satellite out of Colorado).  I know it's early, the music seems to be ok but the production pieces and the jocks are not impressive in the least.  Certainly, no where near the level of the former Magic 96.1.  But then again, Magic was one of the best sounding oldies stations in the country.

Hey, at least the 50+ listeners have got some oldies on the radio again.  We can give the station credit for that!

Too bad it had to be 106.1. I liked the station the way it was and I'm in my lower 40s. Any other changes in formats happening?

From the web:

Aiming to snare a younger demographic, WNMX FM (106.1) abruptly changed
formats at 10 a.m. Tuesday, moving from adult standards like Tony Bennett
to the "oldies" music of the `60s and `70s.
"It's a younger first cousin to what we were doing," said Tom Gentry,
general manager.
In making the change, WNMX fills a void left when Clear Channel radio
pulled the plug on WWMG FM ("Magic") in September 2004 and replaced it with
the rhythmic-pop WIBT FM ("The Beat" 96.1).
Ken Conrad will continue to host the station's morning show. There were no
staff changes because of the format change, Gentry said.

Big congrats to Ken.  He's a great guy.  Just wish they'd have done this four years ago!

So that they would have had a morning show called Ken and the Eggman?  Cheesy

I was toolin along on my way to work when the flip came. I had a hunch this might happen by the tunes Ken's been playing lately, tho. Third song they played after the switch was Magic Carpet Ride.....I Like!!! (just hope the old geezers didn't blow a fuse!) Seems to be satellite delivered (heard a hitch or 2, but I suspect they'll get it slicked up in a day or so). I'm just glad to have some 60's \ 70's music to listen to besides the same ole tired 25 songs the Fox plays.

I agree Magic it's not!  Butn then Magic was a special station.  Lots of fun and energy!

A good Standards format is hard to find. So while I understand the reason for the change I liked what they were doing before.  I'll still have a button on my radio for them but I probably won't go there as often.

Having been in the biz I'm far from the mainstream listener I'd like to see 106.1 get some good numbers they can sell.

I haven't been listening on the hour yet I hope they keep the hourly ABC News. I have a feeling that will be history too.

I must admit, though, that I'm extremely touched and humbled that they made the switch on my birthday.

*sniff*

I'm gonna need a minute here.

Wonder where the WNMX calls will go.

IMHO, good calls for a "Mix" station format.

WOLS were the calls at a 1kw AM facility in Florence SC.

Wonder what their new calls will be.

IMHO, WOLS are good calls for an Oldies outlet.
