Y102 gets no respect
« on: February 28, 2008, 09:15:34 PM »

I am just curious about this subject.  There is lots of chatter about WEEU.  There was lots of chatter about Frank Kicking Y102's butt.  There is lots of chatter about AM's in the Lehigh Valley with a small audience.  But not much talk about WRFY.  Why don't they get any respect?  It used to be that people said...'SURE THEY ARE NUMBER ONE..THEY HAVE NO COMPETITION"
Even though they always did...Ysp, MMR, etc.  So they get a local competitor, Frank  who claims they will "Dismantle a Heritage CC station".  and they don't!  After 2 years with a competitor with more billboards, mailers, etc. Y102 still is number one.  How do you explain this, and why doesn't
Burke, who has been pd for what, 20 years, ever get any respect.  I am new to this area, and love radio, but I just don't understand how Y102 stays on top, with all the problems with Clear Channel puting them up for sale, cutting staff and promotion, and a new station (frank) busting their B.lls, and still they survive....any opnions on this subject?

i don't get it--why would you change something that is working decent enough for them? If they're losing sales, sure, thats time to worry...but they do have lengthy spot sets, and they aren't per-inquiry spots, either...

It is the old adage...

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Lather... rinse... repeat as necessary...

<shrug>  Keep in mind much of what gets discussed is nostalgia - as in "remember when..." thus all the chatter about AM radio in the "good ol' days".

WEEU is one of those rare remaining examples of a station locally owned by the newspaper in town...which was common back in the 1960s where I grew up in WNY.  It's interesting to discuss for that reason.

No disrespect to WRFY - as others have said, it dominates local ratings and seems to have a good portfolio of advertisers.
