We began the Drake consultancy at KAKC just about this time in 1967...at 970 kHz, with 1 Kw-D, 500 W-N...from the Tradewinds Motel, 51st and Peoria.  The top-30 format was also simulcast 6AM-6PM on 92.3 FM.  KAKC stayed with Drake-Chenault for 3 or 4 years, then switched to Paul Drew in August 1972.  All of this happened under the ownership of S. Carl Mark. one of the most beautiful men to work for, who ever competed in a too often ugly industry.

That had to be amazing radio.  Tulsa seems to always have attracted good radio people.  For a medium market, it has a solid radio history.

  It took truly great stars like yourself and the rest of those "too off their meds for primettime" crazies too pull off and execute those wonderful formats.  I truly treasure those memories of ridin' the ribbon and listening to "The Rockin' 97 KAKC"!

Have they torn town the KELI "flying saucer" that was at 21st and Yale? I don't remember if they had done that by the time I left Tulsa in 2006.

  The "Satellite" broadcast facility for 1430 KELI was torn down years ago.  Too bad.  Tulsa seems to tear down the things that make it so unique.  Wouldn't that have made a great location for a Tulsa broadcast museum or a fairgrounds historical repository?  I'm surprised the county commissioners haven't tried to tear down the old fairgrounds pavillion.

Yes Billy is still doing his weekend show "Still Swingin' " on Big Country 99.5 twice a weekend.  He also still handles his sales accounts.  He is semi-retired.  Billy is the class act, only he's not acting.
