Is Kepler Feeling The Heat?
« on: March 18, 2008, 09:02:08 PM »

Is Kepler finally acknowledging what we've all been saying...that his programming needs dramatic improvements?

Or will Goldstein be just another BA "Yes-Man"?

Broadcast Architecture Taps Paul Goldstein - KTWV PD will serve as creative consultant

Goldstein and Kepler have been working together for years, back to the old WNUA clique that formed the nucleus of the BA gang. They totally affirm each other. Just the inner circle circling the wagons. No creative breakthroughs here. Goldstein is, if anything, more old-line than Kepler.

Boy, I was hoping the announcement might be a glimmer of hope for terrestrial SJ and its listeners...instead, this is more bad news...I guess I'll be sticking with JSJ and Bay SJ internet streams.

As an aside, I've been listening to Bay SJ almost exclusively now for several months, and the more I hear, the more impressed I am (not to sound redundant).  I've been a fan of SJ for over 25 years, and have heard many songs over that time period...I am most impressed by the amount of new/unfamiliar songs they Bay SJ plays...they play very little top 20, and focus more on the quality songs on artists CD's that will never see airplay anywhere else (especially on commercial terrestrial SJ stations)...in fact, I've never heard a SJ station of any kind (commercial, satellite, internet, public, etc.) that plays as much new/unfamiliar qualkty music as Bay SJ.  Mostly instrumental...little to no covers...great vocals with a slight urban emphasis to their overall programming.

For those who have not yet listened, I urge you to give it a try.  Like JSJ, I have no agenda in promoting their product...I just love the music.  FYI, FWIW, the Bay SJ DJ's are "welcoming" listeners from the defunct SJ stations in Washington DC and NY.  They may be experiencing a statistically significant increase in listeners to their website, promting these "welcomes".

The little Savannah, GA station that was a BA affiliate just flipped to gospel.  I think it was less than a year.  Kep is feeling the heat to do SOMETHING.  He doesn't want us to be able to say "I told you so", so he'll just bring in someone who will help him transition the format to Smooth AC.  Don't expect a new kind of SJ approach or anything like we've been suggesting.  Kep's got to blow up the format as is, but keep some aspects of it intact to keep his hosts relevant and some of the music as well.  He may surprise us and add some "smart" instrumentals, but pepper the music offering with Smooth AC so it won't sound like we were right about anything.  There is nothing the guy he brought in can offer to this dying radio format. He can only help Kep transition the format.  There may be a "Smooth Jazz Network" announcement soon.  I don't know what, but he's going to have to give it some relevancy somehow with all the defections.  Maybe it will become the Smooth Alternative Network.  Smooth FM Network.  The Smooth Adult Contemporary Network.  There will have to be some type of repositioning.  It's now proven that what it is now is not working.  Lots of news to look for this spring.

Goldstein has been on the job now for over 2 months...predictably, there has been no noticeable change in the quality of BA's music content...Goldstein better start doing something soon, before more BA affiliates bite the dust and the entire SJ genre on terrestrial radio fades into the sunset!!  Embarrassed Cry Angry

HA!!  I always wondered if Kepler reads this board...that being said, I really like Tisdale’s “Rebound” (the single was featured by Art Goode this weekend - Art beat BA to the punch, as usual)...IMHO, it's his best single ever...we'll see if Kepler or his "yes-man" Goldstein decide to play the song regularly on BA (I'm not holding my breath)...

What really sucks is the single has been out for at least 2 months.  Guess I beat them both to playing it!

Congrats Nock...your taste in SJ is impeccable!! Wink

Too bad Kepler and his BA cronies are pathetically myopic or just plain blind when it comes to programming compelling SJ radio!!  Embarrassed

Tisdale is on Rendezvous with is run by Koz and Frank Cody who are totally BA insiders, an employee and a former employee current advocate. This is how much these guys actually care about the artists getting exposure. If you aren't in their clique even if you want to run the show you can't. This guy is in Kansas nowhere near a competing BA station,, he expressed interest in running the Benoit release event and was treated like dirt.

Geeziz, BA seems to have their slimy tentacles everywhere...is it any wonder SJ is dying a slow death...the BA tentacles are slowly strangling the life out of the SJ genre at every turn!!
