Program Directors can be so ungrateful.  Paul Harvey is one of the guys that put news/talk on the map.  He's a staple, a legend, a household name.  A little loyalty while the guy still draws breath, is that too much to ask?

I don't know if PDs need to be loyal, but I do believe stars need to know when it's time to leave the stage.

That's what Bill announced on his show today (Friday).  Paul Harvey has been on a number of stations in the Cincinnati market:  WCKY, WKRC, WNOP and WLW; each picking up the feed from ABC Radio.  It doesn't help when he isn't on the show, but at the age of 89, that can be difficult at times.

Thats CHEAP Channel for ya......especially since Paul is due to come back to the mic on Monday...(even though Dallas radio legend Ron Chapman, of KVIL and KLIF fame, has been doing an excellent job filling in)......let me guess, Tom Schurr is in the market is he?? (What an a$$ from Jacor/CC that is)..

Only old people like Paul Harvey anyway, so nice job in dropping him.  The new, hip, slick and stylish WLW will lose a few octogenarians, but they'll be replaced by the tweens he was scaring away.

"octogenarians", as you so graciously called us, are the most loyal of consumers.  When WLW drives us away, our money goes with us.  Studies have also shown that "octogenarians" have more disposable income than the "tweens".

I started listening to Paul in my tweens....when I 1st started in radio almost 40 yrs ago.....what a voice! And later I was proud to work at the same company he did; used to listen to his feed live from NY off the DATS channel 15 (still have my employee badge from there!!! But then Citadel now runs the show; they dont care if I still have it; hmmm but then again ABC didnt care either! Smiley

Keeping Paul out of respect or for old times' sake [or other ways the same sentiment has been expressed] was easier back when his features were still straight barter.

Ever since ABC started charging affiliates cash to run them -- in addition to the included spots -- it's a lot harder to justify running "Paul Harvey" the programming when Paul Harvey the person isn't on the air performing said programming.

I have loved Paul since I was about eight.   I have nothing but the greatest respect for him and what he's accomplished and wish him nothing but the best.

... but I get why stations are dropping him.

I couldn't agree more.

That said, not many people know when to say when.  Call it pride, ego or simply a love of what they do.

I doubt when my time to call it a day comes I will recognize it either...I hope I do, but I doubt I am much different than you or anyone else in that position.

WBZ AM 1030 Boston dropped Harvey a couple of years ago and noody noticed. He ended up on a flea powered AM that just flipped to spanish language, so he is off in Boston again with zero chance to get back.

When Mitt Romney filled in for PH a couple of weeks ago, he did it from the WBZ studios, but he could not be heard in his own back yard.

Harvey may be a nice guy, but he doesn't translate well into the P1's most stations are shooting for. That's why he is being dropped faster than a girlfriend who has the clap.

I didn't realize they had started charging cash+spots for his show.  That being said, I understand also why a manager would drop the show.  If you are paying cash for the talent, and the talent isn't there much anymore, those dollars are best used else where.

Why does 'DJO picking him not surprise me.(Fuhrman, BoShears...can Carmine be far behind!)

There was a time as memory serves that Harvey was going to switch to 550 and McConnell (at the time doing 10-2) would go straight through but it never materialized.

With Harvey not there much it was time to bail out...not to mention the show is very hard to schedule around..either you bail out of a show early or create a noon block of stuff and junk to acccomodate him.

This is totally off topic, but does anyone remember when Paul Harvey used to air on 1340 WIZE?  If not for that station, I wouldn't even know who PH was.
WLW dropping Harvey doesn't surprise me...Cheap Channel at its best.   Roll Eyes
